What is Be Body Positive?

Be Body Positive is a tool for young people (ages 11-16), parents, carers, and professionals. Using evidence-based techniques in self-guided modules, young people can reflect on their eating behaviours and learn how to feel at ease in their bodies. Parents, carers and professionals can also learn how best to support the young people in their lives. Be Body Positive gives access to a wealth of NHS-backed resources on topics covering healthy eating, body image, fussy eating, ARFID (Avoidant-Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) and disordered eating.

This online resource was co-produced with young people, parents, carers and clinicians. It was created in partnership with East London and North East London NHS Trusts (ELFT and NELFT), leading children’s charity, Barnardo’s, local community organisation, ELBA.

Why is this research important?

Did you know 3 out of 4 children as young as 12 dislike their bodies and are embarrassed by the way they look? What’s more, the number of children and young people admitted to hospital with eating disorders has increased by 35% over the past year. Early intervention is absolutely key to supporting young people showing signs of disordered eating and negative body image – before a concern becomes a crisis. With your help, we can assess the usability and efficacy of this digital tool.
